100 Years of a Black South African Man

100 Years is a fashion show within Gqeberha, which aims to narrate the story of Black South African men and women through fashion, art and music. The objective with the promotional videos were to illustrate two different era of fashion. As the video was to be used as an opening, the location chosen was that of the surround area of the fashion event, to bring a feeling of similarity to the audience.

Behind the scenes

Working with such a large ensemble of models was definitely a first, but a challenge I was definitely up for. We scouted the location beforehand and selected areas we felt best suited for each outfit.

The location was fortunate enough to has sectors that looked more historic and others closer to a modern era. Filming took roughly 3 hours and we almost ran out of sunlight, luckily the models are quick in changing attire and we capture most shots on the first take.

We finished off the bridge sequence illustrating the passage of time while still mimicking the appearance of a catwalk from the show. The sequence was then edited in post to do a transition from one to the other.
