Thirst Trap Thursdays

Backstreet Grill, locally known for their delicious steaks, decided to add new tender ribs to their menu. I was tasked to help promote them, by creating a commercial that is engaging, whilst highlighting the qualities of these ribs and their great price. Before the main video launched, we filmed a teaser, enticing viewers on social media to guess what Backstreet Grill is adding to their menu. A week later the main video dropped to great reception.

Behind the scenes

We had a great laugh attempting to film the opening scene, the talents did a great job at acting their parts. It’s a fine balancing act when filming a commercial of a woman acting aroused, with the help of the cutaway shots to the man looking confused as well as the change in music, we struck this balance.

We filmed each talent individually, both performing to the camera and used lighting to help simulate them sitting across from each other. We used a 35mm predominantly, however to show the intensity of the eating the ribs, we zoomed in closer with a 50mm. My assistants on the day also doubled up as extras in the background, to help create a better frame. After concluding with the talents, we filmed the food shots. These were lit to reflect the marinade and filmed at high frames per second to emphasize the juiciness.

Post-production we focused on getting the soft romantic look on her side, slowing down the footage and adding some diffusion, whereas the man based in reality has a somewhat more sharper appearance. This was all warp up with the food shots overlaid with some motion graphics.
